Ceramic formation - initiation

With Conceição Guerreiro

Ceramics, which is the art of transforming a piece of clay into a unique piece, is attracting increasing interest.

In this training course, which will take place over four sessions, you will develop pieces using four manual techniques - pinching, carving, slab and coiling. You will also learn how to decorate and, finally, you will be introduced to glazing techniques and clay recycling.

It will also be explained how to model the pieces with and without the use of tools and, depending on the objective, the technique will be explained and worked on in order to achieve its purpose.

Examples of how to make a piece without using tools include:

- The slab technique, which is realised using two wooden slats of the same thickness and a wooden roller. In this course you will learn how to make a slab without using tools.

A brief description of the techniques:

Pinching - It's very intuitive and relaxing. This technique is widely used to create bowls, cups and plates. It doesn't require many resources: you essentially need your hands, water and clay.

Coiling - Pieces of the desired size are separated from the piece of clay and rolled, flattened and elongated to form the aforementioned rolls, which we will use to form the desired figures. It is optional to leave the rolls exposed or smooth them out.

Carving - A technique widely used in free modelling to create sculptures, relief murals, but also to create cups and vases. It's very intuitive and relaxing. It consists of removing the core of a solid piece, creating uniform thicknesses that will help with successful drying and firing.

Slab - This is a manual ceramic modelling technique that allows you to make a wide range of pieces. This technique consists of creating a slab with a uniform thickness. It can be used to create flat-surfaced pieces such as mugs, jugs or even tiles.

The phases of this training are:

1st session: Introduction to ceramics. Identification of various types of ceramic pastes, manual modelling techniques and their applications. Modelling using the pinching and carving technique.

2nd session: Modelling using the coilling and slab technique.

3rd session: Finishing and decorative techniques.

4th session: Glazing techniques. Clay recycling.

Target audience:

- People who work or intend to work with: children, teenagers, people with disabilities and the elderly.

- General public.
